Labyrinth
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol representing wholeness that has been found in various traditions over the past 3,500 years. A metaphor for one’s journey through life, the labyrinth is an innovative healing tool that has recently been revived as a mindfulness practice and wellness tool.
Labyrinth Walking
At the most basic level, walking the labyrinth calms, re-connects and balances, allowing us to shed stress and tension and feel more calm and clear. Movement helps us tap into our innate ability to heal the stories that our bodies hold.
The great gift of the labyrinth is that we don’t have to use it in any specific way. We may seek guidance for a problem, ponder a conflict, look for direction or we can simply use as a walking mindfulness meditation to quiet the chatter in our minds. There is no right or wrong way to walk the labyrinth. All that is really required in walking the labyrinth is to show up, place one foot in front of the other, and breathe.
My first labyrinth walk was in 2004 in Ecuador, after seven months of travelling and hiking solo throughout several mountain ranges of South America. I remember eagerly approaching the rope-lined, circular path still looking for answers to what I wanted in my life. My first walk was absolutely uneventful and I found myself wondering if I had walked it right and what I might have done wrong. But on my second walk, it was like an explosion of insights and when I returned to the farmhouse I was staying in, I found myself bouncing off the walls with ideas. All of a sudden I felt energised with new awareness and my next steps became clear and unfolded effortlessly.
In fact, this is the moment that I sketched my heart logo - the heart a symbol of our true self - the spiral inside the heart representing looking inward.
I have facilitated numerous labyrinth-based workshops and walks across Australia, including Labyrinth: Journey to Wellness at the leading mental health conference in Australia - The Mental Health Services Conference (TheMHS). I'm delighted to now be able to continue to facilitate labyrinth-based workshops and walks in Seaford, Victoria and local area.
